Forgotten Lover, Forgotten Friend

My dearest child,

Yesterday gets a bad rap
Strangers promised candy, and we refused
Parents stayed together for more than just the kids
Acrid clothing was a distasteful alternative
Cherishing the things you have, ignoring the things you don’t
Everyman looked respectful—honorable—chivalrous.
Freedom’s message has been ravished from authenticity
Aches and pains are soothed with an icy demeanor
Calligraphy has been transcribed into scribble
Early to bed, late to rise with the virgin’s awakening
Bread of life exchanged for the bread of lust.
Outside looks internally to darkness
Ominous echoes are the still, small voice
Killed by frivolous lover, frivolous friend.
